Season 1 Episode 12 The Last Waltz

The episode opens with Bill and Karen's wedding. After causing a scene and in the ensuing chaos falling off a cliff, Hank falls into his bed and sits bolt upright. Next to him is Karen. He then wakes up again to his daughter Becca shaking him awake to go to Karen's wedding. Shortly before they leave, Becca reveals that she is having her first period. When they get to the store to get tampons, the last box is being grabbed by a middle aged woman. Hank demands the tampons, and the woman refuses. When her husband gets involved, Hank begins to fight with him over the tampons, with the wife eventually coming to the realization that Hank is not the one who actually wants the tampons. After the woman shows Becca how to use them, Hank and Becca go to the wedding.

In the meantime, Bill tells his daughter Mia that he will not allow her book to be published due to the "national climate", to protect his reputation. While Mia gets drunk as a result, Marci and Karen are talking, and Karen reveals that she slept with Hank. A stoned Marci then rushes out to meet Hank and hurry Becca into the wedding as her husband arrives. Hank and Karen share an exchange in which Karen expresses regret for the current situation and Hank gives his blessings on the wedding.

After the wedding has begun and the minister has delivered the oft interrupted phrase of "speak now or forever hold your peace," Bill looks at Hank, only to see a very obviously drunken Mia stand up. While she is berating the two for getting married, Hank stands up to try and remove her, but she reveals her illicit one night stand with Hank. Bill is noticeably upset and knocks Hank into the audience. After taking a look at Becca, Mia lies and says she made the whole thing up.

Later, at the reception, Mia reveals to Hank that Bill will in fact publish her book. Mia also reveals that she had in fact lost her virginity to Hank (though her being a pathological liar makes this reveal questionable) and that is why she has been so vindictive to him. Marci and Charlie reconcile, they are seen having sex behind the house. Hank catches Becca kissing a boy, and tells her he will wait in the car. When they get there and are about to drive away, Karen runs towards them screaming. She jumps into the back of the car and tells Hank to drive away before she changes her mind. As Bill chases after her, Hank eludes him, and the scene fades to black on a still shot of the reunited family as they drive off into the California night.

Season 1 Episode 11 Turn the Page

As Karen is fitted for her wedding dress, Becca drops the news that she wants to live with Hank. Dani informs Charlie that she wants Mia’s book fast-tracked or else. Hank discovers through Charlie that it’s his work Mia’s been peddling. Furious, he tries to stop her, but she threatens to reveal their one night stand. Charlie finds out from Hank about Mia. Becca moves in with Hank and Karen stops by later that night, feeling that maybe this is where she belongs.

Season 1 Episode 10 The Devil's Threesome

Newly minted roommates Hank and Charlie meet a girl at the gym who knows Hank from a past incident and when Hank can’t quite remember her, she beats him up in the ring. Each reeling from relationship woes, Karen and Marcy decide to have a girl’s night out. Back at UTK, Dani meets with Mia regarding a novel she has written. Karen and Marcy decide to pay Hank and Charlie a surprise visit, but get more than they bargained for when they walk in on them and the girl from the boxing gym.

Season 1 Episode 9 Filthy Lucre

After the funeral of Hank's father Al, Hank comes back to L.A. with a draft of a new novella. However Karen is determined to keep her distance with Hank this time. As they arrive home from the airport, Becca sings a song with her band for her parents. Before he leaves, Hank gives Karen his manuscript to read for her critical evaluation like he used to in New York.

Hank receives some bonus money from his film contract and his agent Runkle insists he spend it on himself, suggesting a new car. Hank buys a diamond ring to possibly propose to Karen. He goes to a Porsche showroom and has sex with the saleswoman during a test-drive. Hank buys the car and later he and Becca go to a guitar shop so that Hank can buy Becca a new guitar with some of his money. However, Becca sees a man with his young daughter trying to hock a guitar and convinces her dad to buy it to help the father and daughter out.

Karen wants to confess to Bill about having sex with Hank while Bill was out of town, but he presents a gift of a special photograph which overwhelms her and forestalls her confession. Mia sees Hank's manuscript and secretly takes it to make a copy for herself to read. Meanwhile Runkle's wife tells him that she is in lesbian relationship with his secretary, Dani, and that their marriage isn't working. Runkle fires Dani, but the two women still head upstairs together.

When Hank and Becca return, Karen tells Hank that she can't read his novels any more and returns the manuscript unread. Hank leaves, cursing himself for being insensitive. On his way home he is stopped by a woman asking for directions. Suddenly a man appears with a gun and the two demand he get out of his car. The carjackers drive off in the new Porsche with Hank's manuscript still in it. Hank stands in the road watching the only copy of his manuscript and his new car drive away. The episode ends with Mia in bed beginning to read a copy she made of Hank's manuscript.
