Season 1 Episode 12 The Last Waltz

The episode opens with Bill and Karen's wedding. After causing a scene and in the ensuing chaos falling off a cliff, Hank falls into his bed and sits bolt upright. Next to him is Karen. He then wakes up again to his daughter Becca shaking him awake to go to Karen's wedding. Shortly before they leave, Becca reveals that she is having her first period. When they get to the store to get tampons, the last box is being grabbed by a middle aged woman. Hank demands the tampons, and the woman refuses. When her husband gets involved, Hank begins to fight with him over the tampons, with the wife eventually coming to the realization that Hank is not the one who actually wants the tampons. After the woman shows Becca how to use them, Hank and Becca go to the wedding.

In the meantime, Bill tells his daughter Mia that he will not allow her book to be published due to the "national climate", to protect his reputation. While Mia gets drunk as a result, Marci and Karen are talking, and Karen reveals that she slept with Hank. A stoned Marci then rushes out to meet Hank and hurry Becca into the wedding as her husband arrives. Hank and Karen share an exchange in which Karen expresses regret for the current situation and Hank gives his blessings on the wedding.

After the wedding has begun and the minister has delivered the oft interrupted phrase of "speak now or forever hold your peace," Bill looks at Hank, only to see a very obviously drunken Mia stand up. While she is berating the two for getting married, Hank stands up to try and remove her, but she reveals her illicit one night stand with Hank. Bill is noticeably upset and knocks Hank into the audience. After taking a look at Becca, Mia lies and says she made the whole thing up.

Later, at the reception, Mia reveals to Hank that Bill will in fact publish her book. Mia also reveals that she had in fact lost her virginity to Hank (though her being a pathological liar makes this reveal questionable) and that is why she has been so vindictive to him. Marci and Charlie reconcile, they are seen having sex behind the house. Hank catches Becca kissing a boy, and tells her he will wait in the car. When they get there and are about to drive away, Karen runs towards them screaming. She jumps into the back of the car and tells Hank to drive away before she changes her mind. As Bill chases after her, Hank eludes him, and the scene fades to black on a still shot of the reunited family as they drive off into the California night.

Newly minted roommates Hank and Charlie meet a girl at the gym who knows Hank from a past incident and when Hank can’t quite remember her, she beats him up in the ring. Each reeling from relationship woes, Karen and Marcy decide to have a girl’s night out. Back at UTK, Dani meets with Mia regarding a novel she has written. Karen and Marcy decide to pay Hank and Charlie a surprise visit, but get more than they bargained for when they walk in on them and the girl from the boxing gym.

Season 1 Episode 9 Filthy Lucre

After the funeral of Hank's father Al, Hank comes back to L.A. with a draft of a new novella. However Karen is determined to keep her distance with Hank this time. As they arrive home from the airport, Becca sings a song with her band for her parents. Before he leaves, Hank gives Karen his manuscript to read for her critical evaluation like he used to in New York.

Hank receives some bonus money from his film contract and his agent Runkle insists he spend it on himself, suggesting a new car. Hank buys a diamond ring to possibly propose to Karen. He goes to a Porsche showroom and has sex with the saleswoman during a test-drive. Hank buys the car and later he and Becca go to a guitar shop so that Hank can buy Becca a new guitar with some of his money. However, Becca sees a man with his young daughter trying to hock a guitar and convinces her dad to buy it to help the father and daughter out.

Karen wants to confess to Bill about having sex with Hank while Bill was out of town, but he presents a gift of a special photograph which overwhelms her and forestalls her confession. Mia sees Hank's manuscript and secretly takes it to make a copy for herself to read. Meanwhile Runkle's wife tells him that she is in lesbian relationship with his secretary, Dani, and that their marriage isn't working. Runkle fires Dani, but the two women still head upstairs together.

When Hank and Becca return, Karen tells Hank that she can't read his novels any more and returns the manuscript unread. Hank leaves, cursing himself for being insensitive. On his way home he is stopped by a woman asking for directions. Suddenly a man appears with a gun and the two demand he get out of his car. The carjackers drive off in the new Porsche with Hank's manuscript still in it. Hank stands in the road watching the only copy of his manuscript and his new car drive away. The episode ends with Mia in bed beginning to read a copy she made of Hank's manuscript.

Season 1 Episode 8 California Son

This is the first episode that does not have a scene before the beginning intro plays. When Hank receives a phone call from his sister he finds out that his father Al (Mark Margolis) has died. During a flashback Hank remembers a visit from his father. Hank shows up to the airport in his clean car (seen with a missing passenger's headlight and always dirty in all previous episodes) late to pick up his father. Al comments on the flight, thanking his son for the business class ticket and mentions that not only are the drinks better, but also the stewardesses. When passing by a tree in front of the airport, Al asks Hank what type of flower it is, Hank simply replies by saying it is a 'purple' flower, simply noticing the color of the flower. As the two men get into the car, Al inquires about Hank's maritial situation, Hank replies by saying 'Still living in sin'. Al then states 'Oh your poor mother...She is probably summersalts in her grave.'

Hank is then seen drinking in a bar with a woman named Trixie, when Karen enters and informs him that his sister called her. She gives her condolences and offers an airplane ticket so Hank can attend his father's funeral. After rejecting the ticket stating that his father was an asshole and he wouldn't attend the funeral, Hank tells Karen that she mothers him one moment then acts as if she does not care about him the next. Trixie returns and leaves with Hank.

During another flashback sequence, this one taking place on the set of the movie 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' Hank and Carr get into another argument over the dialogue and overall direction of the movie. Hank and Al (who are both on set) begin to discuss Hank's books, Hank states that Al has never read any of his books, Al says 'Your mother filled me in on them.' The plot returns to the present, with Hank snorting coke off the back of Trixie. When Trixie refers to herself as a hooker he tells her to stop joking. When Trixie reveals that her real name is Beatrice and that she is in fact a hooker, Hank reveals that he has no money left to pay her, so she calls her pimp. The plot is interrupted by another flashback involving Hank's father, this time to when Hank and Karen were still together. Hank, Karen, Becca and Al are eating dinner at a table. Al asks how Karen's work is going, and she mentions that she is working for a new client who lives in Venice and wants everything painted green (Bill). Hank and Becca both say that Bill has a bit of a crush on her, Karen refuses to believe it. Becca asks her grandfather if he would join her and her mother tomorrow at the zoo, Al unfortunately has other plans (to visit an old flame in San Diego). Hank and Karen are in the kitchen while Hank complains about his father, the conversation turns into Hank being too busy to visit with his own family. Hank tells his wife about a plan he has, that as soon as he finishes shooting the movie, they pack up and go back to New York. Karen says that it is a selfish plan, mentioning that she relocated for him, and now that she is becoming a successful architect she has no intentions of leaving. As Hank states that 'We gotta get out of here before the city destroys us both' the episode cuts back to the present, with Hank getting beaten up by Trixie's pimp. As Charlie arrives to pay the bill and Trixie and her pimp leave, Charlie attempts to force Hank to attend his father's funeral. Charlie says that Al was a good guy, Hank re-iterates with 'No he was not, he used to say you looked like a walking penis!'.

Another flashback takes place to where Al and Hank are sitting in a bar.discussing Hank's life. Al tells Hank that no matter what he does, he must keep his family close, Hank states that it is hysterical and ironic that a man who cheated on his wife, and (in Hank's belief) that was never there for his son, would give advice to keep your family close. After the argument slightly escalates, Al tells his son that he (Hank) was much happier the year before when he visited, and even more so the year before, Al tells his son that he is not going in the right direction.

Hank has another flashback, this time to an argument between himself and Karen. Karen accuses him of having an affair, Hank informs her that he is not and Karen wishes that he was having one so she could stop looking for clues. When Hank says that he thought about doing it and everyone else does, Karen says 'I never did!', Hank notices and comments on the use of the past tense, the argument is highly enhanced and gets more verbal. Karen suggests that the two go see a therapist, stating that she needs to talk to someone. Hank asks who she talks to, he asks about Bill, and Karen tells him that he does not want to go down that road. When hank asks if she slept with Bill Karen replies 'You know me Hank, the talking and the fucking go hand in hand.' When Karen leaves the room, Becca emerges from her room, asking if they are going to get a divorce, Hank mentions the fact that since he and Karen never married they can never truly get a divorce. Hank pulls out a cigarette and then looks at the mail on the table, among the mail is a letter from his father, he holds the letter in his hand and stares at it.

In the present, Hank is sitting alone in his apartment when Karen stops by to check on his well being. She goes into his apartment and finds Hank holding the same un-opened letter from the previous flashback. As the two sit quietly, they open the letter as Karen reads the letter, as the letter continues Karen's voice fades and Al's voice begins to dictate the letter. (Starting with the second sentence, and ending on the word man, in 'Love your old man.')

“ To my son the writer,
Something I never said too you much; I love you. My father never said it much either, and I thought I'd be different, but I guess I'm not, I've tried but somewhere along the line you slip back into what you know and I'm sorry about that. And I am sorry we haven't talked in a while because I miss you, you're a good kid and a funny kid, and you're my only son. I said I never read your books but I lied, I read 'em all, I just didn't know how to talk about them with 'ya, I didn't like the fathers in them. I know you writers take liberties but I was afraid that maybe you didn't take any at all. But that's the thing, boys become men and men become husbands and fathers and we do the best we can. You're doing the best you can, you've done good, your books will be in libraries long after we are both gone and this is important. More important is how you treat your family, I wasn't a perfect husband but I loved your mother, and I'm glad we spent our lives together and I am here if you need me. That is all I wanted to say. Love your old man. P.S. I saw a preview of your movie the other night, it looks like a piece of shit, maybe you were right.

When Hank leaves to go lay on his bed, Karen joins him, the two stare at each other for a moment, then begin to kiss once again but this time the kiss leads to the two having sex. In the morning Karen drives Hank to the airport and drops him off, saying that once Becca is out of school, they will catch another flight. Hank hugs Karen and tells her he loves her and does not expect her to say it back to him. As Hank thanks her for helping him get his head out of his ass, he sees the same tree that his father inquired about in the beginning of the episode. He asks Karen what it is called she tells him the name and he smiles and leaves to board his plane.

Season 1 Episode 7 Girls, Interrupted

Hank attempts to disprove Becca’s theory about the non-existence of happy endings by landing Karen a job and setting up an intimate dinner for the three of them. Charlie and Marcy decide to give a threesome a try with Charlie’s assistant, Dani. Mia finds herself in a compromising situation with her teacher.

Season 1 Episode 6 Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

Hank meets sexy Surfer Girl (Michelle Lombardo) at the market. After a night getting high while listening to vintage rock LPs and having sex with her, Hank awakens to Mia, who needs more of Hank’s writing to pass off in her class. He also finds out the Surfer Girl has stolen his guitar (Les Paul) and LPs.

Charlie’s wife Marcy walks in on a strange situation between him and his secretary Dani, and she calls her his “little slave.” She then has sex with him on his desk chair, but he finishes too quickly.

Later at night Hank and Karen go to a concert of their daughter Becca’s band, but afterwards Mia calls him to rescue from her teacher, who is high on cocaine and wants to force her into a threesome with another girl, and she cannot leave. It turns out she was not on a situation as dire as she said. She exaggerated a bit to get him to come. At his home, Charlie tries to talk his wife on being his BDSM slave. Though she is not really enthusiastic about it, they give it a try but it does not go well.

At Karen’s, while Bill is away, she invites Hank to take a drink (absinthe) and they talk about their daughter, their relationship and Karen’s relationship with Bill, and they end up kissing. Hank ends up spending the night in a guest bedroom after he falls into the pool.

Later, Surfer Girl comes to Hank's place to return his guitar and LPs, and offers him another go, which he accepts.

Season 1 Episode 5 LOL (Californication)

The episode begins with another church related dream of Hank's, this time involving Bill and a homosexual blow job. After Hank questions who wants to suck whose cock, he inquires about a girl who is beautiful, smart, funny, but not Karen. After Bill states that Karen does not love him, but loves Bill, Karen, dressed as a nun, bursts into the room and begins to make out with Bill (who simultaneously gives the finger to Hank). When Hank wakes up from the dream, he is in bed with Meredith. Meredith uses the phrase 'LOL' which causes Hank to state that although he does not have a problem with the word, he believes every time a person uses it, they are "contributing to the death of the English language."

After the introduction, it is revealed that Charlie and his wife Marcy are having some marital issues; the situation is further escalated by Marcy trying to insert her finger between Charlie's buttocks, at the suggestion of Hank, who had merely suggested she "spice" things up.

Later, Bill arrives at Hank's apartment and states that they need to have a talk about Mia. Hank gets worried and noticeably agitated. He begins to ramble on about how "I'm really sorry, it's just a fucked up situation and it should have never happened, and no one is really to blame. But I am glad you are here so we can get on the same page," alluding to when he slept with Mia. Bill, confused, questions Hank on what he is talking about, but Hank does not reply and allows Bill to speak. Bill states the reason he came over was because he has to go out of town on business, and he was supposed to speak at Mia's creative writing class. Bill was hoping that, as a writer, Hank could step in for him. Hank agrees, but not without taking something in exchange - Bill's leather jacket. Hank wins over the students at Mia's all-girl school and also learns that her teacher lusts after the young girls he teaches (which later causes Hank to remark to Karen: "Please promise me we will never send Becca there").

Hank gives a radio interview with Henry Rollins where he rants about the lack of proper language on the internet, calling the people who use it stupid. Afterward, he has dinner with Charlie, Marcy and Meredith. Meredith is angry because she used netspeak around him and feels the rant was directed at her, so she breaks things off with Hank. The next morning, she comes back to get her things, and she reveals that her married lover has left his wife, thanks to Hank's actions in the previous episode. In the end, she and Hank part on rather good terms after a last session of kitchen sex.

At home, Becca's pre-teen crush on her guitar teacher ends in her first heartbreak when, that night, he goes off with Mia instead. Afterward, Hank tries to comfort her in his own way.

Season 1 Episode 4 Fear and Loathing at the Fundraiser

In a bid to spark more than a purely sexual relationship with Hank, Meredith convinces him to escort her to an environmental fundraiser. Before the event, Hank stops off at Karen and Bill's house to deliver a gift (a mobile phone) for Becca and learns coincidentally Karen is attending the same function. Karen asks Hank to be on his best behaviour at the fundraiser.

Charlie is also at the function and, when his secretary Dani comes, Hank notices something is going on. Hank also finds Todd Carr, who tells him he's not going to hit him again since Hank's affair with his wife convinced him to divorce her. Karen has trouble with a man that calls her a "cunt", but Bill prevents her from retaliating. Meredith introduces Hank to Jonathan Mandel and his wife Nikki, who Hank later learns is the married man Meredith is having an affair with. Hank tells her he doesn't mind, that he just wants to be warned and, if she wants chaos, he'll create chaos for her.

Meanwhile, back at home, Becca and Mia have a bonding moment, when the two state that they both miss a parent, Mia missing her mother, and Becca missing her father. Meanwhile Charlie is in his office taking erotic pictures of Dani in lingerie, when Hank walks in. Hank convinces Charlie to talk to his wife, since he thinks she deserves it and that she may be up to kinky things. Back at the party, Hank finds Meredith drunk and confronts her lover, stating that it is wrong for him to lead her on for five years with no intention of leaving his wife, Johnathon replies stating that when Meredith talks about Hank she says that he is a nobody and a loser.

While leaving, Hank asks Karen if she's proud of him since he behaved like she asked him before. She tells him yes, but then mentions the man who called her a "cunt", is passing by. Hank walks over to the man and knocks him out. At home, Becca asks Karen if she stills loves Hank. Meanwhile Hank takes a drunken Meredith to bed and nurses her, until his daughter calls on her new phone. Becca and Hank talk on the mobile phone that he gave her. She tells him she thought he was having trouble sleeping. She reminds him that, when she was little he helped her sleep by counting mermaids in the ocean. He begins to count the mermaids and then both he and Becca fall asleep on the phone.
